I am not sure what the rules say on this, but I would be surprised if what actually happened follows the rules. This is the sequence of events that happened:
1) A challenges B, when B tried to steal from C.
2) Challenge unsuccessful, A loses a card.
3) B gets 2 coins from C.
Before step 3, shouldn't C get a chance to block B's steal after an unsuccessful challenge from someone else? -
