Showing how many total people each player has unintentionally reveals what cards people picked: if someone digs and their people total goes up, you can obviously reason they got a person from digging. The same applies when someone wins a skirmish and you see their people total goes up: "oh it went up by four, I wonder what they won?..." It also just ruins the feeling of not knowing who's winning until the very end
