I noticed some rules of the Hearts game are different in this implementation. I don't think this is incorrect by the "rules summary" given on BGA, but wanted to report it anyway as it feels strange to be playing Hearts, but some of the rules are different. No worries if this is intended (it works as it is). Notable differences are:
- 2♣ does not lead the first trick as it does in Hearts.
- You can play a points card on the first trick (I've definitely played the Q♠ on the first trick, not sure about ♥ cards).
- Q♠ breaks hearts, although I believe this is a fairly common Hearts variant so probably not an issue.
I can't vouch for the Spades implementation as I've never played it before discovering Sparts, but it seems fun so I'll check it out.
Great game regardless. Thanks for adding it to BGA! -

Report history
1) The two of clubs rule is generally used, but it's not universal. It just so happens that when my friends and I learned the game (back in the 1980's, yikes) we hadn't heard about that rule. So we didn't use it. Personally, I think it's better to allow the first player to decide what to lead-- it's especially useful when you're trying to shoot the moon. :)
2) Yes, playing the queen of spades OR a heart is allowed on the first trick. This is straight personal preference. It's pretty fun when you're holding one of those point cards and have a void suit, so you can drop it on the first trick. As with #1, I like that you have the choice and aren't restricted by a rule that says you can't play a point card. It also has a small effect on strategy, since no one knows if the first trick is "safe".
3) You're right that the queen of spades is commonly considered "breaking hearts" in a standard game.
In the end, I wrote Sparts because it's a game I played long ago with friends, and I'm still playing online games with those same friends. I decided to do this so I can play with them. It's awesome that other people like you are playing it too (and hopefully enjoying it!) but the little quirks in the rules are really because that's the way my friends and I have always played it. I hope that makes sense.
At the very least make it a gameplay option.
the Q of spades has never broken hearts in any version I've played so again that surprised me. I don't feel as strongly about this one but I don't like it personally. I'm wary of adding too many options, but if its easy enough to implement - more choice and customizability is great for all players!
I can see you've made the 2 of clubs thing an option already and that's awesome. I play exclusively with it on now.
As far as the queen of spades breaking hearts, I feel like that's actually pretty common, because it's a point card. I could add it as an option, but as you pointed out, now we're starting to have a lot of options that might be confusing to someone starting a game.
The queen of spades DOES break hearts; that's a common rule.
Thanks for the input, everyone!
