This is different in Azul 2 and 3 where there are specific towers to put the pieces into to hide them from view.
This is more important. Indicating used tiles feels a bit too easy to me.
"Leave this out. There is nothing in the rules about being allowed to see exactly what's in the discard..."
These are manifestly incorrect. The rules, as pointed out by BoardGameMatt, state to place the used tiles into the box lid; thus the tiles are visible throughout subsequent rounds, until the bag needs to be replenished.

which is visible in the box lid.
Moreover, it seems in high level BGA play, manually tracking tile counts is widespread. Doing it manually in an excel spreadsheet is relatively easy to do, but it's an annoying hassle and slows down gameplay for everyone. But not doing it puts you at a disadvantage, especially going into the last round when the exact tile counts are precisely known.
Similar to live scoring options in perfect information games like Terraforming Mars or Great Western Trail, I do appreciate that simply making something easier can change the feel of the game, and some players may not like that; so adding it as a toggle seems like a reasonable compromise?
Would be a nice quality of life improvement for game speed if we added this to Azul, IMO!
