Commander Chess, or Cờ tư lệnh (literally 'Chess Command') is a xiangqi variant created by Hải Quý Nguyễn.

Cờ tư lệnh is played with 38 pieces (19 per player) on a board that is 11 lines wide and 12 lines long. As in xiangqi, it is played on the vertices of the grid. The board is divided into two territories divided by a river in the middle of the board. The three files on one side of the board form the sea. The object of the game is to capture the opponent's Commander, or all units of a single division of the opponent's army.
The Navy and Airforce can transport other units and all pieces may move and attack in the same turn.
Any piece that checks the opponents commander permanently gains heroic status and may move and attack further.
Anit-aircraft guns immediately defend against enemy aircraft and automatically shoot them down.
This game is combination of chess-like strategy mixed with a modern war game.

- Object of the game To win you must capture the opponent's Commander, or all units of a single military technical type of the opponent's army:
Marine battle - Both Navy ships. 2 pieces total. Land battle - Artillery, Tanks, Infantry. 6 pieces total. Air battle - Both Planes. 2 pieces total. Raid battle - 1 piece total.
- Commander If captured you lose. Cannot goes past opponents C line-of-sight, and if you open a direct line-of-sight then you immediately lose. If opponents pieces place the commander in check they gain 'hero' status. Only the commander can enter the headquarters (put C on the HD). 7. Rule in place to capture piece - All the troops on land can stand still to shoot and capture piece on the sea. Navy artillery can stand still to shoot and capture object in mainland. But if capturing an opponent’s piece along the coast, it has to occupy the position. In the mainland, there was only one case of standing on the spot for the aircraft called bombs. 8. Coastline rules When moving along the coast the pieces on the land are unobstructedt by the warships because they are under the water, contrary when moving along the coast the warships are unobstructed by the pieces on the land.
